NUWCEM 2025
A team from Empa and PSI attended the NUWCEM (5th International Symposium dedicated to cement-based materials for nuclear waste management) conference in Avignon, which was organised by the French society for nuclear energy (Sfen) and the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). The conference provided a great opportunity to present research and engage on discussions the current state of research on magnesium binders - both in general and specifically as a potential material for nuclear waste repositories.
Barbara Lothenbach introduced the recent development on Cemdata, a thermodynamic database for hydrated cements.
Ellina Bernard used her keynote talk to give a comprehensive overview of the current status in MgO (-silicate) cements.
Paula Montserrat-Torres illuminated the effect of pH on the hydration of MgO-nesquehonite blends.
Maciej Delekta presented a poster about Magnesium silicate-based cement under repository conditions
Jan Schmitt showcased a poster preliminary data on the sorption behaviour of ferric iron on magnesium cement phases.
