Zeyu Zhou
PhD Student
Zeyu Zhou is a PhD student at Empa, focusing on making green Mg-carbonate cement to absorb and store carbon dioxide. Specifically, he employs a wide range of supplemental cementitious materials (SCMs) to MgO/Nesquehonite binder to study their effect, including amorphous silica, metakaolin, reactive alumina, and industrial Si-, Al-rich materials. The aim is to assess which SCMs may be suitable for blending with Mg-carbonate cement, to make full use of possible materials and avoid waste.
His field is cement chemistry and his work involves hydration study, solid and liquid phase analysis, thermodynamic modelling and a bit mortar strength testing. He is skilled in materials characterizations, especially in XRD, FTIR, TGA, and NMR. During his PhD, He also received systematic training in Thermodynamic Modelling (GMES) and Liquid analysis, for instance, Ion Chromatography and total Organic Carbon.
