Group leader “Cement Systems”

John Provis is Group Leader for Cement Systems, within the Laboratory for Waste Management at Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI). He leads the PSI research activities related to cements of various types, for applications including nuclear waste disposal and sustainable construction.

I like to describe my field of research as studying the materials science and engineering of cements, things that can be blended with cements, things that can be made from cements, and things that we can reasonably pretend are sufficiently closely related to cements. I originally trained in chemical engineering and mathematics, but I would probably now describe myself as a materials scientist. I have worked with a wide range of characterization techniques, particularly beamline-based and other advanced methods, and also have some background in modelling and in standards development.
