Prof. Bin Ma
Group leader “Environmental Chemistry”
Bin Ma studied geochemistry at the University Grenoble Alpes in France. After obtaining his Ph.D. there in 2017, he went to the Empa (Zürich, Switzerland) for post-doctoral study. In 2021-2024, he was employed as a tenure-track scientist at PSI (Villigen, Switzerland). From 2024, he became a Full Professor of Environmental Chemistry at the NCEPU (Beijing, China). His research interests comprise solid waste disposal chemistry and cement environment chemistry, especially focusing on the radioactive waste treatment and geological disposal, and the adsorption and diffusion behaviors of key nuclides in various cement environments as well as the evolution of cementitious materials.
His field is cement chemistry, geochemistry and radiochemistry. His current scientific research focuses on the formation process of Fe-containing hydrotalcite in Mg-cement and its retention ability towards the relevant contaminants, such as redox-sensitive radionuclides and heavy metals/metalloids. His research also encompasses the study of reactive transport mechanisms, environmental cement chemistry, and mineralogical evolution in the geosphere. His work involved a wide range of analytical techniques such as wet chemistry methods, anoxic operations, lab-based and synchrotron-based materials characterizations (including TGA, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM XRD, XPS, XANES-EXAFS, and PDF of HEXS), as well as thermodynamic modeling using GEMS and PHREEQC.
